GSEP partners with IFC and MiDA to host first PPP conference in Ghana

November 17, 2015

As part of its Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in Sustainable Electricity Development Program, the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) partnered with the International Finance Corporation (IFC) and the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) to organize and host a high-level dialogue on PPP targeting the African region in Accra, Ghana. In line with the objectives of GSEP’s program, this dialogue offered a platform to seek expert views and discuss best practices and concrete ways to promote effective PPP for sustainable electricity and energy efficiency projects in the region.

The Hon. Dr. Kwabena Donkor, the Ghanaian Minister of Power, opened the conference. For Dr. Donkor, this workshop represents the right type of initiative that is needed around the world: “The provision of adequate and affordable energy is a fundamental prerequisite for the economic and social development of any country.”

Ing. Owura Sarfo, CEO of MiDA, commented that: “This conference is quite timely, considering that Ghanaians are asking questions in respect to how power supply along the whole chain can be enhanced … This is supposed to be a capacity building conference … intended to help fill the knowledge gaps that participants have in this area.”

Some 40 high-level representatives from ministries, policy makers, energy regulators, banks, public and private utilities, and sector experts from 10 countries were in attendance at this workshop, which ran from November 16-17, 2015. During this conference, panelists openly discussed the steps taken to reform the sector in Nigeria and Ghana. Lessons learned, case studies, and experiences were shared from abroad, namely from Georgia, the Philippines, and India.

Ms. Ronke Ogunsulire, IFC Country Manager for Ghana, remarked that: “PPPs are playing an increasingly important role in government efforts to bridge infrastructure gaps and to deliver better services to citizens at a lower cost.”
