Propelling decarbonization through green industrial policies and building electrification | Panel discussion and SODE roundtable

GSEP presented an event featuring a high-level panel discussion and Strategic Open Dialogue on Electrification (SODE) roundtable on the sidelines of 2023 European Sustainable Energy Week and the Eurelectric Power Summit in Brussels, Belgium on June 19, 2023. Leading stakeholders will exchange on the role of new green industrial policies in propelling the energy transition and discuss opportunities and challenges in electrifying the building sector.

SODE roundtable

Electrifying the Building Sector: Unlocking Potential of Technology

Buildings account for a considerable portion of the global energy consumption, but electricity only made up 32% of buildings’ energy demand in 2019. Space-for-action for electrification is thus still significantly unexploited in the building sector. Several measures and technologies can be implemented – in both the short and medium terms – to increase building electrification and decarbonization while enabling the grid to cope with this increase.

This roundtable addressed questions such as:

  • How can electrification act as an enabling step for the deployment of technologies and practices towards smart and connected buildings?
  • What are the challenges faced in retrofitting installations? How can utilities accompany customers in their transition and build awareness around electrified solutions?
  • How can we facilitate the training and availability of the workforce required to implement electrified solutions?

Moderator:

  • Christianna Papazahariou, Head of EU Engineering Centre & Business Strategy, LG Electronics

Firestarter presentation:

  • Anders Lyntorp, Head of Energy and Technology, City of Copenhagen

Panel discussion

How Green Industrial Policies Shape the Energy Transition

In the last year, the United States have implemented the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and the European Union has presented its Green Deal Industrial Plan, both aiming to enhance competitiveness in the fast-growing net-zero technology sector. What are the benefits of these new regulatory frameworks and funding opportunities for electric utilities? How are these policies echoed across continents and what impact could they have on other countries’ energy transition? How will these policies shape global collaboration and cooperation to accelerate the energy transition?

Speakers:

  • Mark van Stiphout, Deputy Head of Unit for Research, Innovation, Competitiveness and Digitalisation, European Commission
  • Derk Jan Swider, Vice President Group Strategy, Foresight & Analysis, E.ON
  • Valerie Layan, Vice President, Power & Grid – Europe, Schneider Electric
  • Shengyu Wu, Senior Expert, State Grid Energy Research Institute

Moderated by Julia Souder, CEO, Long Duration Energy Storage Council
