Despite significant progress over the last decade, the pace of electrification needs to more than double over the years to come if the most pressing global decarbonization goals are to be met, according to the 2023 Global Electrifrication Monitor: Trends in end-use sectors. Join GSEP Executive Director Vincent-Michel Duval and Energy Expert, Lecturer & Consultant Marco Baroni for the on-demand virtual launch of the 2023 edition of this original research report. The GEM delves into the current state of electrification around the world and opportunities for immediate acceleration, as well as an exclusive analysis of energy prices and affordability in the context of a global energy crisis. The event highlights the report’s major findings, tackling questions such as:

  • How did Covid-19 impact the global progression of electrification through 2020?

  • What impact has the energy crisis had on energy prices, and what is the role of subsidies in mitigating the effects?

  • What benefits do electrified technologies offer in confronting issues such as energy security and affordability?

Vincent-Michel Duval

Vincent-Michel Duval

Executive Director, Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership

Vincent-Michel Duval is the Executive Director of the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP), an organization representing some of the largest electricity producers on the planet and which, combined, produce, transport and distribute more than 25% of the electricity consumed globally. Before joining GSEP, Mr. Duval was Head of Integration of New Technologies at Hydro-Québec. He has many years of experience in engineering, strategic planning and governance of innovation projects and portfolios. He notably played a key role in the electrification of transportation in Canada, as well as in technological innovation by piloting microgrid projects. As the global technological and energy context develops, electrification has a central role to play in enabling the decarbonisation of our communities, businesses and economies. Under his leadership and with his expertise and pragmatic approach to continuous improvement, Mr. Duval actively works to ensure the success of the energy transition and to promote a carbon-free world. Mr. Duval has a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Polytechnique Montréal and a Master’s degree in Business Administration from HEC Montreal.

Marco Baroni

Energy expert, consultant, and lecturer

Marco Baroni is an energy expert, consultant, lecturer at the Institut d’études politiques de Paris (Sciences Po), and Senior Fellow at Enel Foundation. Mr. Baroni has over 20 years of broadly varied work experience in the energy field, acquired in between a widely recognised international organisation (the International Energy Agency, IEA), a very dynamic European electricity and gas utility, energy consulting and university lecturing. He co-authored eleven editions of the World Energy Outlook, IEA’s flagship publication, where he was in charge of managing the power and renewables team and responsible for the related analysis, modelling and write-up. He has also been co-responsible for scenario designing, climate, gas, subsidies, and energy efficiency analysis. In the private sector, he worked as Senior Market Analyst in Essent Trading – a power and gas Dutch utility – responsible for coal and power markets mid- and long-term analysis. More recently he has been working as an energy consultant on a variety of subjects, including the introduction of the Emission Trading System in China, modelling of the China Power System, renewables integration into power systems, global nuclear power analysis, hydrogen imports into the European Union, global energy employment, on a capacity building programme for African countries on energy statistics and modelling and on global electrification of final sectors.

Across the world, electrification is acknowledged as the path forward to achieve the decarbonisation of our energy systems and put us on track to meet global environmental goals. However, despite its recognised importance, the current pace of electrification is less than half of what will be required over the coming decades if net-zero targets are to be achieved. Untapped potential for electrification or “space-for-action” is still vastly underutilised across countries and sectors, and urgent action is required to unlock it, even before focusing on the hard-to-abate sectors.

Building on the findings of GSEP’s Global Electrification Monitor, this webinar will evaluate the recent pace of development of ten main electrification indicators across regions, presenting insights on short-term opportunities for progress and the long-term direction that will be required to unlock the potential for electrification and achieve energy transition goals across sectors and around the globe.
