2016 Beijing Summit

The Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership’s Annual Summit ended today in Beijing, China. This two-day event, hosted by the 2015-2016 Chair Company, State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC), brought together senior executives of some of the largest electricity companies around the world.

The GSEP Chairmen and representatives, Executive Director, and invitees at the GSEP’s Summit in Beijing.

The Summit opened with speeches on connectivity and global cooperation by Dr. Shamshad Akhtar (Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) and Mr. Zhenya Liu (President of the China Electricity Council and Chairman of the Global Energy Interconnection Development and Cooperation Organization).

Discussions were conducted on SGCC’s annual theme "Roadmap for Energy Future – Moving from Today’s Power Systems to a Global Energy Interconnection.” State Grid’s Global Energy Interconnection (GEI) concept is defined as a global, interconnected, strong and smart grid with Ultra High Voltage grid as the backbone.

Acknowledging the alignment between the organization’s recommendations made to policymakers attending the 21st Conference of the Parties (COP21) and the Paris Agreement, the Chairmen also discussed the role that electricity technologies can play in helping countries reach their GHG emissions reduction targets. The Chairmen agreed that electricity will play a key role in responding to the global climate challenge while simultaneously supporting countries’ economic growth, development and people’s welfare. These key views are expressed in the Beijing Summit Statement issued by the Chairmen of the GSEP.

At this occasion, the GSEP also issued its 2015-2016 Annual Report, which summarizes the organization’s projects and capacity building activities for the year.

The Summit closed with the transfer of the GSEP Chairmanship to Hydro-Québec whose theme for the upcoming 2016-2017 year will be “Electricity as a Carbon Footprint Reduction Tool”, which is directly linked to the goals to be achieved by the UN-Paris Agreement.
