GSEP Celebrates 25th Anniversary with Summit in Montreal

May 31st, 2017

The Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership’s (GSEP) celebrated its 25th anniversary with the conclusion of its annual Summit this week. The event, hosted by Hydro-Québec, brought together CEOs and senior executives of the world’s largest electricity companies to discuss the key role that cleaner electricity can play to reduce the global carbon footprint, while adding value to the everyday lives of people.

“The GSEP’s impressive results are something to be proud of,” said Éric Martel, President and CEO of Hydro-Québec, “They are the result of our discussions and collective efforts over the last 25 years. But the work is not over – future challenges remain.”

The Summit featured discussions with leaders in the global energy sector from the International Energy Agency and the World Energy Council. The Chairmen discussed how utilities can shape a world where electricity is an important vector to decarbonize other sectors, such as transportation and buildings. In an increasingly complex digital world, new business models are constantly being developed. The challenge in formulating these new approaches is to ensure that a system-wide and long-term overview is supported by public policies and the right incentives.

As a leading group of international electricity companies, GSEP members are committed to concrete actions to decarbonize. Electricity is the energy of tomorrow and drives many solutions to climate change – whether it is implementing lower or zero carbon energy technologies, energy efficiency measures, or the replacement of fossil fuels in other industries. It is the most effective means to help secure a better climate in the future while ensuring economic growth and improving the quality of life of millions of people. These key messages are outlined in the GSEP’s Montreal Summit Statement issued by the GSEP Chairmen.

The Summit closed with the transfer of the GSEP’s annual Chairmanship to EDF whose theme of the year, “New electricity frontiers: Harnessing the role of low-carbon electricity uses in a digital era”, will explore how the digital revolution can accelerate decarbonization in the electricity sector.
