The aim of this workshop was to develop solutions to different issues related to renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management and recycling for Algeria and countries of the sub-Mediterranean region.
This was the first activity in a joint initiative between the Global Sustainable Electricity Partnership (GSEP) and R20 Regions of Climate Action. Together with R20’s office for the sub-Mediterranean regions and with the Algerian Ministry of Territorial Planning and Environment, a workshop was held from September 23-25, 2014 in Oran, Algeria on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency for the Sub-Mediterranean Basin. The aim of this workshop was to develop solutions to different issues related to renewable energy, energy efficiency, waste management and recycling for Algeria and countries of the sub-Mediterranean region. As a unique pool of expertise in the electricity sector, GSEP was able to share the knowledge of its members in these matters with their counterparts in the region.
Focusing on three major aspects of the development of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects – mainly regulatory frameworks and policies, technologies and their application, and financing and business models – several representatives from West African and Mediterranean countries were invited to share their views and experiences with experts from the international power sector that included representatives from GSEP members Iberdrola, Hydro-Québec, Enel and Électricité de France. A total of 48 participants representing 15 countries were in attendance.
